Therapy Sessions
We have expertise in several evidence-based, Cognitive and Behavioral therapeutic approaches.
How it works
01
INTRODUCTION
First, we connect with you for a free, 15-minute phone consultation to discuss what brings you to therapy and answer any questions you may have about working with us. We will then assign you to a clinician who can best meet your needs.
02
ASSESSMENT & GOALS
Next, you will meet with your clinician for an evaluation of your symptoms and needs. Your clinician will provide you with information about your diagnoses, help you identify your goals, and discuss how they can help you achieve them using evidence-based treatments.
03
TREATMENT
You and your clinician will work together through selected interventions to address your identified goals. These will generally be tools based in cognitive-behavioral therapy and/or dialectical behavior therapy, which have been shown to be effective for general distress as well as a range of specific psychological diagnoses.
“C” and “B” Therapies
Clinicians at C&B Psychological Services have expertise in several Cognitive and Behavioral therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical-Behavior Therapy, and Mindfulness. Each of these therapies is scientifically supported (sometimes called “evidence-based”), meaning that multiple, well-controlled studies have shown that these therapies are effective at treating a range of psychological issues.
Research suggests that these treatments lead to significant improvement in quality of life for many people, as well as reduction of symptoms in depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders. Many of these disorders include symptoms related to unhelpful thinking patterns and/or learned patterns of unhelpful behavior. To treat those issues, Cognitive and Behavioral therapies offer tools for coping in both of these areas.
Cognitive Strategies
involve changing thinking patterns, such as how to:
- Recognize thinking traps that are contributing to psychological stress,
- Develop more adaptive thinking patterns,
- Let go of ruminations or “thought spirals”,
- Manage intrusive thoughts or memories,
- Use more effective problem-solving strategies,
- Improve self-confidence.
Behavioral Strategies
involve changing behavioral patterns, such as how to:
- Engage more fully in the present moment to increase feelings of enjoyment or mastery,
- Approach situations in an effective manner, instead of avoiding or suffering through them,
- Improve communication skills,
- Prepare for potentially difficult situations or interactions,
- Develop skills to cope with painful emotions,
- Calm your mind and relax your body.
We can work with you collaboratively to develop an understanding of your goals and to generate a treatment strategy. Through exercises in session as well as “homework” practices between sessions, we can help you master tools to change your thinking and behavior patterns, thereby improving your coping skills for managing difficult emotions and life stressors.
Sessions are typically scheduled weekly as 45-50 minute appointments.
